Week 2 at ESPE (6 hours)

Hi everyone welcome back to my work experience dairy, in today’s blog I am going to explain my second week at ESPE… enjoy!

Before the day started, I felt excited for the activities to come, this was because last week was so good and enjoyable. We started off with a gymnastic session (at Duke Street Primary School) with receptions and year 1’s and the main aim was to perform different rolls correctly. This included the egg and pencil roll on the matts.

Below is how to perform each of the rolls correctly

During this session I had to go around the room and try guess which roll the student was doing. In the process I also helped anyone struggling and corrected their technique. This allowed me to work with the children on a 1:1 basis and gain more confidence within the teaching of gymnastics.

The afternoon we went to All Saints Primary School to deliver another tag rugby session. The main aim of the session was to perfect the technique of passing backwards. This focused on changing the side of the pass so that the students could pass both ways. During this session I worked with the students who didn’t have a partner and Mrs Smith used me to demonstrate the perfect technique to the class. By working with Mrs Smith, I have learnt new ideas on how to keep control of the class. For example, one way to gain attention is to raise your hand or clap a beat for the students to copy. I’ve also learnt the delivery of new drills and skills which has given me the confidence go try new sports and activities.

The afternoon moved on to the ’30-minute active fitness’ with the whole of KS2. The fitness activity today required the children to get into pairs. One of the students would be completing an exercise (for example squatting) while the other student ran to the end of the court and back again to give there partner a high five. This would be repeated and then the students would swap positions and different exercises were given.

For the final lesson of the day we took a small group of children, from the year 5 class, to do an intervention class. This class was created to improve students that struggled with PE, reward students that behaved well in class and give the shy students more confidence. In today’s lesson we got to know each other, and we used a big inflatable ball to play team building games. Overall I really enjoyed my second week at ESPE.
