Week 2 Reflection

Learning objectives:

  1. Becoming more confident when delivering sessions.
  2. Delivering small parts of the session/ teaching to small groups or individuals.
  3. Develop my own knowledge of starting your own company and what it involves.
  4. To improve my problem-solving skills during sessions that don’t go to plan.

Week 2 was another successful week! I believe I’ve become more comfortable in the process of working with ESPE and what is expected in each session. I was very excited to start the day as I’ve realised from this process already, that this type of career is still the path I’d like to go down.

During the gymnastic session I felt confident when giving the students feedback as I feel I’ve gained more knowledge on the sport. This has abled me to give the correct techniques for the exercises. When looking at my aims above, I definitely feel I am working towards achieving L.O 2; this is because I now have the confidence working with individuals or small groups. One positive with working with ESPE is that I get to work with a range of ages and abilities. This has made me realise that some aspects of each session has to be simplified to suit the abilities of everyone.

An example of this situation was during the year 3’s rugby class. Using Gibbs cycle again, I will explain what happened and how I can improve so that if it’s happens again I can react better. Mrs Smith set off a passing backwards drill and one group was struggling so I went over to give some advice. This group contained students that struggled with throwing and catching so instead of trying to explain the same drill again I could of simplified the drill. After explaining the same drill again and the students still struggling, I felt useless and unable to give the right instruction. However if this was to occur again, I have learnt to simplify the activity to suit the abilities of the students. This has supported the use of experiential learning, and learning on the job, because if I didn’t go through this experience I wouldn’t have learnt what I could of done better.

I believe the intervention class is a fantastic idea to help improve those who struggle with the basics, such as throwing and catching. By giving the students simple activities it allows them to gain a more structured session that allows them to have more time on a 1:1 basis. During this session I was able to work with these students on a 1:1 basis and improve my own coaching style to suit their ability. Overall I believe week 2 was very beneficial for me and I’ve developed some key coaching skills for the future.
