Hi everyone, welcome back to my work experience blog!
This week was a bit different to the previous 2 weeks as the morning was spent in a PE meeting. This allowed me to gain more knowledge on the logistics side of the business and how Mrs Smith helps Primary schools develop in their PE department. The main aim of the meeting was to plan the structure of the ‘Active 30-minute fitness’ meeting for all the teachers. This program was put into place by the government to keep children fit and healthy and the aim of the meeting was to get the teachers involved with the process and identify the benefits for the children. Mrs Smith had already put together a presentation to show the other teachers. This included the video below:
After watching the video, I had a clearer understanding of why the government has set this new scheme for primary schools to follow. The scheme advised that 15 minutes of fitness had to take place in school and the other 15 minutes was the responsibility of their parents to do at home. The meeting that we planned outlined when the 15 minutes would take place in the school day. As a group would put together the following ideas-
5 mins at the start of the day
10 minutes during dinner
Take away afternoon break and call it the ‘active break’.
After discussion we concluded that participating in physical exercise straight after eating wasn’t suitable. So, the final decision was to take away normal afternoon break and turn it into the ‘active break’.
In the afternoon we did rugby with the year 3 group. The main aim of the session was to focus on learning when to run for the next pass, while still using the correct technique for a backwards pass. During the session I had the opportunity to demonstrate the correct technique and perform the correct timing demonstration. In the session I took one group and Mrs Smith took the other. This gave me the opportunity to give clear instructions to my group and help them improve on the timing of their runs.
For fitness this week, we did a dance routine inside because the weather was awful outside. During this session I completed the dance routine at the front, with Mrs Smith, for the students to copy. I encouraged the students throughout and helped anyone that was struggling.
The intervention class was based around the game dodge ball and why giving each other positive feedback is important. I was able to give advice during the game and I constantly reminded the students to give each other feedback. Overall, I think I learnt more about the theory side of the business compared to the physical side, this week. I still believe this has benefited me as I learnt that there is a lot of theory to do as well as plan the practical lessons.
