Week 3 Reflection

Hello welcome to my third week of reflection…

Learning objectives:

  1. Becoming more confident when delivering sessions.
  2. Delivering small parts of the session/ teaching to small groups or individuals.
  3. Develop my own knowledge of starting your own company and what it involves.
  4. To improve my problem-solving skills during sessions that don’t go to plan

Knowing I would be taking part in a PE meeting today I was very excited to see the theory side of the job compared to the physical. However I also felt anxious, at the same time, because I didn’t know what to expect and I had never been it that type of sporting environment. Learning about the 30-active minute was very beneficial for me because I was able to gain a further understanding of Mrs Smiths job role. This has allowed me to work towards L.O. 3 because I have learnt that Mrs Smith helps schools with both practical and theory.

Mrs Smith’s job role involves:

  1. Delivering a variety of national curriculum PE sessions.
  2. Helps the schools fulfil Ofsted demands.
  3. Gives advice to their current PE staff on how they can improve their own sessions.
  4. Helps with PE documentation
  5. Organises and delivers Sporting competitions

This is evidence that work experience is benefiting me when looking at L.O. 3 as I now have a good knowledge and understanding of the job role.

During the year 3’s rugby session I felt confident taking half the class, after Mrs Smith had explained the task. I feel that during this work experience I have definitely achieved L.O. 2 however I believe I need to deliver parts of the session to the whole class to feel the full benefit (and to achieve L.O. 1).

Another cycle that I can use to help reflect on my current experiences is Kolb’s cycle. When coaching one half of the class I came across a problem, and I can use Kolb’s cycle to help me improve so that if it occurs again, I know what to do. Concrete experiences relate to what happened and how I felt. So, during the session we had to choose 2 students to be the defenders. I chose two students that I believed could perform the task well (more developed in ability). However, this was a bad decision because the other students were unable to get around them and perform the task set. While this was occurring, I felt on edge for the lower ability students because I knew they would struggle with the task. Using Kolb’s cycle, I then stepped back and reviewed the situation and identified what I could have done differently. I have now used ‘active experimentation’ and put together a reflective plan to improve in the future. This is that I would put a mixture of abilities as defenders. This will allow the other students a better chance at completing the task and if they were still struggling, I would remove one of the defenders so that there was only one defender in total. Experiential learning is the type of learning I am doing during my work experience and using this cycle has allowed me to learn from my mistakes. Concluding that I am becoming a better coach day by day by learning on the job.
